As the quintessential symbol of death, depictions of human skeletons make great Halloween decorations. However, skeletons represent so much more than death. The scientific study of skeletal remains helps us investigate ancient peoples and societies. Beyond injuries, diseases, and funerary practices, bioarchaeology examines how past humans lived. Case studies focusing on body modification, cranial surgery, and kinship from Anatolia, the Andes, and North Africa illustrate our shared humanity with people who lived thousands of years ago. Please note: this presentation includes images of human skeletal remains.
